Strawberries in Balsamic with Black Pepper

Makes 4 servings
2 cups small fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and halved
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Grinding of coarse black pepper
Fresh mint leaves, optional

Place the strawberries in a medium bowl. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and the vinegar. Stir gently to combine. Let sit for 1 hour at room temperature. Grind a small amount of black pepper over the berries. Spoon into small dessert bowls, pouring some of the juice from the bowl over the berries. Garnish with mint leaves, if desired.

“Here is a simple take on dessert for fresh strawberries. Balsamic vinegar not only plays up the color of the fruit, it also creates exciting contrast between sweet and tart. For the prettiest presentation, use petitesized berries bursting with flavor.”
